Paying it Forward: Juniata College Career Week

EmpiriStat, Inc’s President and Principal Biostatistician Nicole C. Close, PhD, returned to her roots in February, participating in Juniata College’s Career Week. Invited by the Juniata College Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership (JCEL), and the Young Entrepreneurs Society (YES), Dr. Close lent her extraordinary insight and wisdom for a series of entrepreneurial talks, seminars and one-on-one consultation sessions with students, culminating in the college’s annual Career Day.

Juniata College, located in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, is an independent, private, four-year liberal arts school founded in 1876. Juniata’s motto “think-evolve-act” is at the core of EmpiriStat, and Dr. Close expands upon these words every day in her businesses.   With resumes and references in hand, more than 400 students visited this year’s Career Day which attracted more than 100 employers from Pennsylvania and across the country, including such Fortune 500 companies as AllState Insurance, Deloitte, General Electric, WalMart, Hershey Foods Inc., New York Life, and PPG Industries.
Nicole often returns to Juniata College to mentor and counsel students and graduates on their education and career paths. For this most recent effort, JCEL and YES invited Nicole to speak on a variety of entrepreneurial topics related to her role as one of the areas foremost biostatisticians, harnessing the latest IT technologies for business, insights in starting and running a successful business and the challenges facing small business owners in today’s economic recession. Students were also permitted to make appointments to work with Dr. Close in individual sessions throughout the week.
Having founded her own successful and sought-after contract research organization, Nicole is indeed a unique perspective for students to learn from.  She has also in the past taken students she helped groom for careers, and hired them. Dr. Close commented “I love returning to my campus and being an active part of the student’s education. The sky is the limit and they have great ideas that excite me to be a part of, even if it is a small part helping them to see their next steps.”
