11th HOUR OF THE 11th DAY OF THE 11th MONTH
Whether Veteran’s Day is called Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, or as in Belgium, Day of Peace in the Flanders, we commemorate the armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany that signaled the end of hostilities on the Western Front. The armistice took effect at eleven o’clock in the morning – the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918.
Veteran’s Day is celebrated all over the world. People pause for a two-minute moment of silence, retailers and restaurants may offer discounts or free meals to veterans, while others may simply gaze across the dinner table at their spouse, father, or mother and say, “thank you”. Although controversially, not all schools have the day off but some, like New Market Elementary in Maryland, use this as a day of learning, honor, and giving thanks. The students celebrated by holding their third annual Veteran’s Day celebration. Veterans were invited to attend, not only to be recognized and thanked, but to also educate. Each veteran rose with their host student as their names were announced and were presented with a “Buddy Poppy”, known as the small red flower symbolic of the blood shed in World War I from Flanders Field. From its inception, the Buddy Poppy Program has helped the VFW live up to its motto, "to honor the dead by helping the living." EmpiriStat’s own Caylee Ortega and her fourth grade host, James Lawson, stood proud among the others as their names were read.
The EmpiriStat family is passionate about supporting military personnel and their families not only on Veteran’s Day but all year through. EmpiriStat participates actively in many charitable organizations including Operation Happy Holidays and Wounded Warrior Project. This program assists military families in financial need and supplements their holiday season with food, clothing and gifts for children. Through this program EmpiriStat is able to sponsor an entire military family. In the spirit of the holidays, the true gift is being able to give back to these families who give so much. Thank you to all of our Veterans and our Fighting Men and Women of the US Military!
