Workshops and Educational Sessions

Medical Board Refresher Workshop: Epidemiology (3 hours) and Biostatistics (5 hours)

A one-day refresher course and workshop with practice exam questions. Course materials include defining basic epidemiology and statistical concepts, indices to describe health status, review of diagnostic tests and interpretation, calculation and interpretation of common biostatistical procedures, as well as interpretation of clinical trial results. Applications will be presented in case studies and practice questions tailored to the specialty/background areas of the registrants (example: Preventive Medicine, Infectious Disease, etc.). Handouts and tip sheets included in course. Lunch will be provided.

Essentials of Clinical Trials for Health Practitioners

A one-day introduction for health practitioners in the essentials of clinical trials. No previous experience is necessary. The morning portion of the course will cover clinical trial phases, ethical issues, developing the research questions, defining and describing the study population, basic clinical trial designs, concepts and implementation of randomization and blinding, sample size and power of a study, baseline assessments, recruitment of subjects, data collection, proper statistical techniques, and assessment and reporting of harm.

In the afternoon, the class will focus on reporting and interpreting of results, conduct peer reviews of selected clinical trial publications (in the background area of the class registrants), and discuss regulatory issues of taking a drug or device to market. The class will also review how to become involved in clinical research if interested and the resources required for their patients to learn about current clinical trials they can join. Presentation material, handouts and resource sheets are included in course. Lunch will be provided.
